Hardik Pandya Makes History

On Friday, December 19, Hardik Pandya made history by becoming the first Indian cricket player to reach 2000 runs and take 100 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals. In the 19th over of India’s innings, the 32-year-old Baroda cricketer scored the 61 runs he needed in the fifth Twenty20 International to become a member of the 2000-run club.

Pandya becomes the fifth Indian overall to reach 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals.

The record of scoring the most runs for India in T20Is is in the name of former captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit played 159 T20Is from September 2007 to June 2024 and amassed a total of 4231 runs. Rohit is followed by Virat Kohli, who also finished his T20I career in June 2024. Kohli played 125 T20Is for India and scored 4188 runs.

Other Indians who have scored more than 2000 runs in Twenty20 Internationals are Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul.

In the fifth Twenty20 International, Pandya faced 25 balls for India and scored 63 runs with five fours and five sixes. Together with Tilak Varma, who scored 73 runs off of 42 balls, he added 105 runs for the fourth wicket.

Pandya reached his half-century in just 16 balls prior to joining the 2000-run club in Twenty20 Internationals for India. He currently holds the record for India’s second-fastest half-century in Twenty20 Internationals.

In addition to surpassing Suresh Raina with his 63-run knock, Pandya became India’s fifth-highest run scorer in Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa. Pandya has amassed 373 runs in 15 innings in 20 Twenty20 Internationals against the losing finalists of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Tilak Varma holds the record for most runs scored by India in the 20-over format of the match against the Proteas. Tilak has amassed 496 runs in 10 Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa, including 73 on Friday.
